| Chinese engine Surging I am Stumped
I have an MTD Lawnmower with this huge black Chinese engine. When the choke is applied it starts in the 2nd pull and runs ok till I remove the choke and the engine surges like crazy and once again when I apply the choke the engine runs nice and smooth. I removed the carb and when I opened up the bowl it was spotless I removed the main jet it was spotless. I cleaned everything I could reassemble and the surging was the same as before. What have I missed? |

| You have a lean condition somewhere. Until you find the problem, just run the engine with the choke partially ON. My Onan engine on my JD developed the same problem and I ran it for a year like that until I noticed one day that the Welch plug had fallen out of the side of the carburetor. |

| On these one really needs to get a bit aggressive with cleaning wire or they get a new carb. Watch over the gaskets too. Had one too that the cap was venting poorly and it delivered a slight stream of fuel to the carb. So verify that you get good flow through the float valve as well. Too bad these carbs are not as cheap as Honda carbs... |
