I have a vintage 1997 model 10518 Lawn Boy. Has been great but now has a problem with the brake cable and/or the brake mechanism. When I squeeze the brake cable bail, I can no longer compress the spring enough at the other end to allow the brake contacts to provide a ground to allow the mower to start. I can manually make this occur but then when I release the bail the mower keeps running. Do I need to replace the brake cable and/or brake assembly or is there another way to repair such as adjusting the cable or assembly? Thanks in advance - first time post.

Likely the cable is what is binding. You should try to unhook the cable, maybe try to work some lube into it. Once the cable is unhooked, you should be able to verify if the brake assy itself seems free to disengage and return freely. If the cable is adjustable, you would see it under the handle panel.

Thanks tomplum. I took the cable off and discovered a small break in the "z" that hooks into the bail. Replaced with a new cable and am back in business. Thanks again.
