I have a 7226 D-series LB and the rpm's don't speed up between low and hi but just enough to 'hear' a small difference. All the gov parts are there and seem to be working. Could a weak spring on the knob/lever be causing this? Thanks.

Depends. Is the top speed within the normal range of about 3200 RPM? If too slow, there are a number of reasons. Can you manually speed up the engine?
|
If your model has the plastic modular carburetor you can try adjusting the altitude screw.

I did have to adj the altitude screw some to get it to where it is now. I haven't actually checked an exact rpm #. I can manually speed up the motor by moving the throttle on the carb, but with the rod going up to the gov assembly, it idles back down after I let go. I have a 19" 5244 just like it, and idles quite a bit faster. I might just go ahead and replace the spring and see what happens. Lucky for me, theres a hardware store in my area that was a LB dealer back in the 2 cyl days, and still has lots of parts in the basement collecting dust I can go rummage through. I picked up the 7226 Wed for free. Got it home and cleaned the carb, and tank. Was missing the fuel cap and was full of water in carb and behind reed plate. After doing all that, I mowed the yard with it Thursday. Checked underneath afterwards and crank seal hadn't leaked a bit. I plan on taking the muffler apart and cleaning the ports (can't hurt). I picked up a chute, bag, and leaf shredder kit for $25 at the store, and made my own support rod. Lawn Boy asked $60 for one (crazy). You simply can't beat these old LB's. Give me one over any new mower. I also have a mid-80's self propel, but it's missing the carb and some of the safety start parts. Would like to get it going, but not sure if it's worth the $ in parts I'd have to spend.
