RE: no spark on 5 hp briggs

Did the coil have a kill wire on it?
IF so, it's likely grounded.

Listing the Model & Type#'s allows one to know WHICH 5HP Briggs you have out of the dozens of models they built.

RE: no spark on 5 hp briggs

its a 130202 engine and no it has no kill wire, its been suggested a bent or broken flywheel key,

but would that stop a spark, I can see the spark being out of time but no spark??

RE: no spark on 5 hp briggs

or to be more precise the enigne is model
130202 0523 01 79022 206

RE: no spark on 5 hp briggs

Is the fly wheel rusty? Has to be cleaned and air gap set.

RE: no spark on 5 hp briggs

I did sand the rust off and the gap is set, correctly
is it possible the new coil is defective from the factory?

as you can see in the attached pic there is a crack in the metal that surrounds the magnet, right hnd sie the top of the magnet and the metal is sepearted from the main flywheel

would htat be the problem??

RE: no spark on 5 hp briggs

Rust on the flywheel doesn't have any effect on the magnetic field.
The coil must have a good ground however.
