Scag Tiger Cub 48 inch....leaving strips of grass between blades?

The problem of having uncut/poorly cut grass between the blades, only occurs when mowing taller grass...5"+.
I don't normally wait until the grass is that tall, but with the consistent rains sometimes it's unavoidable.
I have new blades, the belts are tight, etc........any other suggestions, or is this typical of this mower? Thanks for any and all help. |

| This is NOT typical of that mower. The Scag Velocity Plus deck is designed specifically to be able to mow thick, tall grass without clogging or leaving stringers. I used to have that problem with my Craftsman LT1000 42", but dont have that problem with my new Tiger Cub with the 48" Velocity Plus deck. The only thing I can imagine is that you *may* be cutting too fast for that type of grass, try slowing down just a little. Also, make sure the deck is level side to side and the proper pitch front to back according to the manual. The owners manual has a troubleshooting section that has some suggestions for that problem. Sparse tall weeds growing in thin grass seem to be the worst for leaving behind "stringers", but the Velocity deck does not normally do that. |

I have the same experience of strips left uncut with my Tiger Cub. I don't have an operator's manual. Can anyone tell me if there's an easy way to get at the blades for inspection, removal etc? Thanks |

| The best method I've found is hooking up my utility trailer to my pickup, and then with ramps, cut from 2x8s (shorter than the wheel base of the lawn mower) drive the mower up the ramps until the front wheels are on the back edge of the trailer.....use a tie down strap to secure the mower in that position.....remove the ramps and you will have a clear span from both sides of the mower to inspect and/or remove the blades, clean the deck, etc. Also, the foot rest, raises to provide better access to the top nut that secures the center blade. I also found replacement blades on ebay (6 blades for about $58.00) that works really well and matches the original equipment perfectly. Hope this helps! |

Thanks for your reply, Wink05. I learned (yesterday) that the undercarriage was completely jammed with old grass material, which I have now cleaned out. My mower has the mulching kit, so grass doesn't discharge by way of a chute and I admit, I've been negligent in keeping it clean under there. I'm happy to report that the mower now cuts better, with no leftover 'strips'. Good luck! - Kevin |
