LawnBoy Ignition Module

This spring all of my 'boys' fired up except my 10301,
which didn't have spark, (ran fine when I put it up
for the winter). When my new CD pak arrived I put
them both on the bench and got out my high end multimeter,
(Fluke 189). I compared resistance readings and came up
with the following results:
Bad CD Pak: plug wire to steel laminations, 316 ohms,
(new Pak, 527 ohms).
Bad CD Pak: steel laminations to grounding tab, 0.0 ohms,
(new Pak, 6.2 ohms).
Bad CD Pak: plug wire to grounding tab, 0.0 ohms,
(new Pak, 528 ohms).
I installed the new CD Pak and the mower fired right up.
I have the old one on my work bench and will try to
dissect it, using my Dremel tool, as I am beside myself
not knowing what is inside these things that fail so
often. I probably won't get to it until winter, but
I'll post my results then. |

| I sure wish there was a substitute or some other fix. It is riduculous, the frequency of failure. In fact, I never had a solid state ignition fail except on a lawnboy. |

| My Lawnboy 10301 just failed this week to produce spark. I would like to run the same resistance tests, but I am unclear what you are referring to when you say "steel laminations." What part of the CD module is that? Thanks for assisting me. |

| If there was a reliable way to check these ignition modules with a multi-meter, a chart would have been available decades ago. Sorry to burst your bubble but you're wasting your time. |

There ARE coil testers that will acurately test these coils MOST of the time. I have a buddy who has one which I have used with probably 90% accuracy, they are not cheap and are rare. I do not remember the name of the tester. Walt Conner |

Ibpod, go through google patent search to get the schematics on these, OMC made several styles. To give a new CD pack the best chance of survival, make sure the mounting standoffs are absolutely clean and apply some silicone grease ( the same kind used when replacing a headlight on your car) to seal out moisture. Also never remove the spark plug wire and pull the pull the starter cord unless you provide another gap for the spark to jump. |
