Replacing engine on self propelled RWD

We hit a very solid object with our lawnmower(Craftsman 675 briggs & stratton, power propelled, 22"), bent the blade and crankshaft. Looks like we need a new engine or lawn mower. I have a couple questions.

When looking for a replacement engine, I'm assuming I have to get one that is power propelled rather than just push? Do they come in Front wheel drive or rear wheel drive engines, OR is it just self propelled and you can determine which way the belt goes?

Is it difficult to replace a lawn mower engine? It seems like it just involves a few bolts, attaching the belt, putting a new spark plug in, adding gas and oil, but does anyone that has experience feel like it isn't worth the hassle?

We just bought this mower 2 months ago for $300 and now they have gone up in price. If an engine is around $200 and we can get a new blade for $20, then that seems cheaper and easier.

Please help, need advice!
