Ariens Mower works with no Kill Switch

I have a 1983 Ariens Riding Lawn Mower (RM830e) with a Briggs And Stratton Engine. I have been working on with a mechanic friend of mine. We have recently got it running, however, we discovered that the only way to get it to run is to disconnect the Kill Switch wire from the Ignition Coil. It seems that when we connect the Wire the mower gets no spark. We have resorted to starting the mover with out the wire attached and turning it off by putting the throttle into Choke position to stall the mower out. What exactly is causing the mower to work without the kill switch and how do I fix this problem?
