Need imput on a tractor engine

I have a Craftsman Garden tractor, 27.0HP,54" cut. Bought the tractor in 2006 and the day the warranty ran out she blew a rod. I want to reaplace the engine and was wondering if I could gowith a smaller engine and what I need to look for. Can anyone steer me in the right direction. Used her only one season soI would like to get her up and running again. HELP!

As long as the shafts match up and any PTO, I don't see any reason why you can't swap engines.

Thank you for your help. Would the owners manual tell me what size shaft I have so I can check on line for enginesor dowe have to dismantle it first? I believe it is a Vertical engine.

would I be looking for the axle shaft? Is that what has to match up with my engine or the brake shaft?

The engine shaft has a pulley on it and turns the transmission and/or deck blade. It's under the floor boards. Contact Tulsa Engine Warehouse. They will know what engine to put in there.
