How would you rate these Snapper engines?

I have a ~1992 self propelled walk behind Snapper mower with 5.0HP B&S engine (all stock except Gator mulching blade). It runs/cuts great, but just in case it gives out I'd like to know what new Snapper model to replace it with. I narrowed to three choices, the main difference is engine type:

RP2160KWV (Kawasaki FJ180V)
RP21675BDV (Briggs & Stratton 700 Series DOV)
RP21875BV (Briggs & Stratton 875 Series OHV)

How would you rate these engines? Factors to consider are power, reliability, ease of maintenance, and cost of ownership(maintenance/repairs/etc).

I haven't had the Kawasaki but heard it was a seriously goof engine. That being said....I replaced my Snapper's Briggs and Stratton engine after a long and useful life. I installed a Briggs engine similar to the 875 series and it is by far the best walk behind engine I have ever had. Super easy to start and extremely powerful. Cost was lower than the Kawasaki too.

I've read mixed reviews of the Kawasaki on this site.

I was leaning toward the B&S, I'm just wondering if the 875 is worth the extra $160 compared to the 700.

Kawasaki, hands down.

The Direct-Operated-Valve engine is interesting to me - I'd like to play with one to check it out. It's a good idea how they work the valves with a one-piece actuator for each one. This looks to be lighter and possibly more durable than the Honda OHC with it's timing belt. However, there's no way I can recommend one to someone else with no data yet on it's performance. Of the choices provided I like the Kawasaki.

I'd go with Honda but in your case just go with the B&S 700 and you will have plenty of hp and it will be the cheapest of your 3 choices. In general most B&S engines are cheaper to fix than Kawasaki's

I would go with the Kawasaki. I had one on my Snapper mowers circa 1995. It was fantastic: powerful and reliable. I now have a Honda Harmony mower (the Snapper was stolen) and I miss the Kawasaki engine and its power.

I have been through 2 kawasaki engines that were on a 2003 cub cadet.
Both had the same trouble. The crank shaft got bent.
I am careful about were I cut and did not hit any thing.
I talked to the mower tech about this. It seems the crank on the kaw. tapers
to a smaller diameter toward the bottom of the shaft. He has seen quite a few
with bent cranks on both commerical and home equipment. I will stick with the briggs from now on.
