Craftsman Mower/Tecumseh motor: No spark. No Kill circuit?

Sears Craftsman 22" Self-propelled, Lightweight Magnesium
Model # 131 97800 (CRAFTSMAN, Model # 13197800)
Patents: 2,774,439 / 2,915,318

Engine: Craftsman Four-Stroke Models - Vertical Crankshaft
Model no:143-197032
Serial no.: 9157 15057

Tecumseh Model Number: ECV105-147002

I'm trying to revive another lawn mower, curently getting no spark. I haven't seen spark but (out of 50+ pulls) I think I may have felt a small shock once or twice.

Cleaned up everything under the flywheel, removed any surface rust from magnets, stator, checked and cleaned wiring/connections.
Points are operating/Cleaned contacts (Have NOT replaced points or condenser).

Disconnected, measured coil resistance
primary: approx 1.6 ohms
secondary: approx 7,600 ohms

Reassembled several times trying the coil at slightly different angles (see other post). Little to no difference.

My intention was to then try with the kill circuit disconnected. The problem is, I can't seem to find any sort of kill wire/ kill circuit.

  • Do some models not have an electrical kill but just choke the carb?

  • There is a chance this did have one but perhaps a previous owner worked on/removed it. Where would it/should it be?
On the screw terminal where the primary and condenser connect to the breaker there is an unused spade lug but I find no
loose wires with a matching connector.

  • Am I just missing it?

Also, the times when "a coil baking" is in order, measured with an ohmeter, wouldn't one get continuity on one or both windings?

If the point contacts were bad, not clean enough, or improperly gapped, at this stage, one would still get some spark, —even if a poorly timed one, correct?

Thanks

Incorrect timing will still produce a spark. Your kill wire may be attached to your condensor.

Did you try a new plug? Check your other post.
Peace

Well, I figured touching the spark plug lead while pulling the starter would give me a bit of a jingle even if the plug was junk but, yes, I did use a new, known working plug and got the same results.

I think my next step should be to make sure there is no kill circuit involved but I can't seem to find one or don't see how what is there might work.
I don't know much about the history of this mower and wondering if parts may have been removed. (Perhaps provisions are made for certain features that may or may not be included in certain models?)

- In the upper left hand section of this photo there is a lug with nothing attached. Should there be? Is this not where a kill wire would be attached?

- Is the L-shaped metal tab in the center of this photo mechanical only, just to block further movement? It looks like it could be part of a "switch" but mates with no other contact.

- What is that linkage shown in this photo? It connects on both ends but it there doesn't seem to be anything attached to the middle section, under the flywheel (a vane, brake, etc) to articulate it in any way. Is something missing?

biglumber, Thanks for the Tecumseh service manual! This will be very useful. I am still going through it but there's a lot and I think much of it pertains to different, newer models. I'm also still comparing to the exploded diagrams but I thought photos might reveal something glaringly obvious to some of you.

- Also, this small metal clip shown here dropped out from somewhere under the flywheel. Is anyone able to identify what it is, where it's supposed to connect, etc.?

Before I can go make further progress with this, I need to understand its kill circuit, if there is one or not, how's it's supposed to work, if the components are there, etc.

As usual, Thank you for any input. Your help is very much appreciated.

I don't recognize that clip on the block, maybe from an old repair. The tab on the carb looks like a limiter. If the clip on the points box goes to the points, it's probably the kill wire hookup.

The other photo is of the governor linkage. That's how it looks.

A simple ohmeter will make your life easier. Your condensor should not be grounded, and when your points close- it should ground to release the spark. On point type ignitions, when you would shear a flywheel key far enough- you would lose spark. Is it posible to have the timing shifted far enough to lose spark- I dunno. Is there a little wire rod hooking over the coil to retain it? As far as a kill wire- it will either attach to that lug via a spade connector or other connector under the nut. It will ground the ignition to kill the engine.

That's just what I did (right after my last post)..

I figured I'd try new POINTS & CONDENSER next. The local shop didn't have them in stock so I thought, before ordering, waiting, etc. I'd try to test as best I could. Disconnected wiring to isolate points, manually opened & closed and tested for continuity with ohmmeter and found not to be working properly. Cleaned them even more than I already had with sand paper/emery board worked them against each other, tested again and eventually found to be making/breaking contact. Installed, partially reassembled, pulled and saw spark!

Put more together in preparation to see if it would fire. A couple of pulls and the recoil spring seemed to break. Dis-assembled to find that the center hub that the spring latches onto is bent all out of whack ..just from the spring tension?! (over-tensioned?)

(Here again, rather than solve a problem I just swap one for another. Do others also experience this?)

So far, I haven't yet been able to find a part number for this and if I did, most other parts for this model are usually listed as unavailable. What is the proper name of this part?

I'll make a few calls tomorrow but in the meantime, might anyone know offhand if this might be kind of a generic part used in a other Tecumseh engines?

I may be able to pound it out and patch it up with a little weld (or JB Weld) but I don't think it'll hold and would prefer a replacement.

Anybody have one they'd like to sell?

Thanks

You have projects that seem to be never ending sometimes- we all get those. The key is nothing too bad too often.Way to go on the spark. 590432 spring hub- according to searspartsdirect.com
