Are you able to pull the plug and test for spark immediately after it won't start?

A mower your age can have a significant build-up of grass and dust under the top shroud and around the cylinder which causes the motor to overheat. This can cause the ignition coil to malfunction until the engine cools down.

If you are able, remove the covers and blow everything out with compressed air and your problem might go away.
