Craftsman 18.5 starting issue

I bought my garden tractor in 96. 18.5 kolher engine. No real problem untin lately. When I try to start it, the starter turns but, sometimes, it doesnt sound like it is making contact with the flywheel..just spinning. I can trun the key on and off half a dozen times and it will begin to turn the flywheel a little, and then it will catch the flywheel solid and start. This only seems to happen when its cold. After it warms up, I dont seem to have a problem. Is there something that forces the drive gear on the starter to go up and down to contact the flywheel when you want to start it...or what?

If the battery and starter is strong and connections are good, then the drive is sticky. These drives can get a bit grabby at times. Pull the cover and the cap covering the end of the starter drive and carefully work in a drop or 2 of your favorite lube on the outside of the shaft. Sparingly is the key or bad things will happen. Normally that will fix these right up. It is possible that the drive would need to be replaced, but not likely on these.
