Toro mower # 20490 won't stay running

I have a Toro lawn mower, model # 20490 that runs real well as long as I don't engage the blade bar. Once the blade bar is engaged it shuts off immediately. My elderly dad used to own a small engine repair (mowers) and has done all the obvious tuneups but these newer mowers are out of his scope. We purchased this mower new in 1998. Could someone please help us out. Thanks, Sheila

It would help to have the vitals on the engine, it sounds a little like a devise 'safety switch' etc. could be shorting out the spark? Check all the moving parts you can visually see, for bare wires.Good luck to ya
