I hope this posting is in the right place?! I have an older Ryobi line trimmer that will run great for about 3 seconds, then die. It is also quite hard to start. It has a Zama carb. I have pulled the carb, inspected all gaskets and diaphragms, and blown out all passages with compressed air (while the carb was apart). I also pulled the fuel tank and cleaned it out completely and put a new filter on. Same thing, hard to start, runs great for 3 seconds then dies. I also installed a new plug, still no dice. One thing I did not do was to remove what are, I think, the high and low speed needles. They have plastic tops on them that lock them in place, and i was afraid of messing something up trying to get them out. Could my problem lie in those needles? Or elsewhere? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I think the trimmer uses a CDI-type ignition. I say the trimmer is older, but maybe only 10 yrs old or so. I did not check the diapraghm against a light. Could a hole in the diapragm cause the symptoms I described? Thanks

I have a Ryobi as well. I had the same problem. I changed the 2 fuel lines. They had a pin hole in them. This fixed the problem right away. I went to NAPA and got 2 feet of the fuel line(taking my old fuel line with to make sure I got the right stuff)and fixed it myself. The weird thing was that the pin hole was so small, it would run until I touched the trigger. I fixed that then the throttle cable broke 2 minutes after I fixed it.
