Honda Engine Puffs white smoke when Starts

I have a Honda GVC 160 and when it sits for at least a day it puffs smoke when I 1st started, it puffs thick white/blue smoke for at least 15 seconds and it smokes a bit for another 15 seconds. If I started 1 hour later no smoke.

The thick white smoke sounds like a carb issue but the blue smoke is oil.I've been trying to find out what's going on but I'm still looking into it fot you.

'The thick white smoke sounds like a carb issue'

Incorrect - indicates burning oil.

Be sure you are using the right oil and putting in the right amount. Use either 10W30 or SAE30HD. The engine takes 18 ounces, and the dipstick is NOT screwed in to check. If you have too much oil in it, it will seep past the rings during a hot soak (the period after shutting down a hot engine) and burn when the engine is started. Also, make sure you are not tilting the mower with the carburetor on the low side either for maintenance or mowing. This can cause oil to get into the intake tract and cause oil smoke. You also need to check the pleated paper air filter to see if it's oily - this usually happens after tilting the wrong way. Replace if oily.

This is most likely oil smoke. I hate to say it, but the engine is likely worn or is suffering an internal defect related to the piston/rings. As the engine warms-up, the piston expands compressing the rings tighter in the cylinder. That is likely why it stops smoking after 30 seconds (it could actually be a myriad of reasons, but rings are most likely).

I would try a thicker, synthetic oil. Synthetics have a greater shear strength (meaning they wear off less)and this may help smoking on start-up. May I suggest an HDEO synthetic, 15-40W (Rotella T)?

Thanks for all your input, I did remove a bit of oil and I did get it to just below the fill point with the did stick un-screwed, I am currently using 10-30 oil.

Question. If the oil level is at the correct level and the mower is siting flat, is the oil not sitting below the piston if so how can the oil make it into the piston?

I tried adding 20-50 oil it smokes for 20 seconds vs a minute with the 10-30 oil. I was wondering if the valves are out of adjustment could this be a source of oil bulding in the engine.

No. Starting to sound like wear/damage like Jeff said. The valves could be involved though. Just as in a car engine, if the valve stems are clearanced, it will suck oil into the cylinder. In light of that, I would at least take the cam cover off to see if the cam area is full of oil because of a plugged oil return.

Ok I just completed a compression test and it came in at 70-ft lbs I think that is great compression considering most lawnmowers come in at 60lbs and not burning a drop of oil. Should I remove the valve cover and adjust the valves?

I think the GCV has a compression release so that number may not mean much. Adjusting the valves might not hurt anything but could not have anything to do with oil-burning.

The blue puff of smoke has almost disappeared, As suggested by the forum members I changed the oil and I started the mower and let it run for 2 or 3 minutes I did this everyday for a week and I also removed the spark plug and sparayed 1/2 can of wd30 and let the mower sit for a few days. I started the mower and after letting it run for a few minute to clear out the wd30 the smoking on start-up is just abought gone. Thanks to all for your suggestions another mower saved from the dump.
