Question on Tru-Cut Reel Mower

Have a question I would like to ask. I have a Tru-Cut reel 20 inch and put a smooth roller on it a couple of years back. i had a person that works (head greens keeper) at a nearby country club that asked me what i was cutting my yard with. i told him it was a tru cut and of course he scoffed at that because he's not a fan of the tru cut and more of a fan of the jacobsens. i understand that but at the time didn't want to spend the extra $$$ on a used reel mower. anyways, he also told me that my roller i have on it lays the grass down and does not allow the mower to cut as well as it would otherwise. he said that a grooved roller would be much better and would allow the mower to cut at it's maximum capability. can anyone tell me in fact if this is the case or not???

and if it is, can grooved rollers be purchased for tru-cuts?

As long as the roller hits the grass after it is cut and you mow frequently I don't see any problem. I haven't owned a push reel for decades - hopefully the roller isn't up front!

Oops...my mistake. Ignore that message about it being a push mower. I was thinking of something entirely different.

Your friend is wrong in your case, You are not cutting a golf course green.
The grass will bounce back when it exits the roller.
You will have a stripe effect from the roller, which is becoming very popular.
Look up rollers for reel mowers and you will see what I am talking about.
Tru-Cut is a excellent machine.
Also the roller acts like a anti-scalping accessory.

yea, i'm thinking his thought process maybe a bit skewed since he takes care of greens. i did have to mow with a rotary for a couple of weeks while my reel was in the shop getting backlapped and then i brought it home and cut the grass and now my yard looks AWFUL. looks like i scalped it a bit even though i raised the bedknife on my reel. the greens guy suggested i take the roller off and put my casters back on.
