Problem with Craftsman Mower

My grandson bought a used mower and it has a problem. After priming it five times and pulling the cord it fires up, then starts to die down, then fires up, then start to die, then fires up, then start to die. This cycle continues until you turn if off. The mower is a 6 and 3/4 HP craftsman push (not riding). Seperate oil and gas, and it's self propelled. Any help would be appreciated.

It sounds like the carburetor is gunked up with varnish, residue from old gas. You can clean it out yourself, or get someone to do it for you. I hope he didn't pay too much for the mower..

Can you use an auto carburetor cleaner to clean out the varnish?

Auto carb cleaner will work fine on a lawnmower carburetor. You might be able to avoid taking the carb apart, if you add some gum-out to the gas tank, and get the mower started. It will take an hour or so of operation for the carb to self-clean.
