Walk-behind vs. Riding mowers?

Which is really healthiest for the lawn? I have a moderately large Fescue lawn, not enormous, so the labor of pushing the mower is not the issue. It just seems to me that the walk-behind mower produces a nicer-looking cut, & I wonder if it may also in the long run produce a healthier lawn.

I pay someone to mow for me, & the guy wants $4.00 more per mow to use the walk-behind mower. I'm willing to pay that, but just wonder if my observations are just purely my imagination, or is there something preferable to the walk-behind cut in reality?

I'm all for doing what is best for the lawn. I fertilize, use weed-preventer, use a sprinkler system for watering, & do core-aeration in the Fall. During the brutal heat I skip a cut & have a less groomed appearance rather than forfeit the health of the grass. With all this effort and good intentions, I would like to know the truly most beneficial machine for cutting the lawn. Or does it really not matter one iota?

Thanks for any insights!
