bent crankshaft on toro bbc type mower?

I have a toro lawn mower with tecumseh engine i belive to made in the mid 1980's. I dont have the exact model since its at the service center however this one has the typical 3 speed transmisson and also the bbc feature where you move the control handle down the back up to enguage the blade. I couple weeks ago my son was mowing and aparently hit a stake we use to mount the dog leash in the yard. The blade was bent so took it to the local store. the mechanic informed us later the crankshaft was also bent from the impact. I try to trust him however unsure. Under the blade is a black cover that the blade drive belt is located under. I have had that off from time to time to remove grass build up causing belt slipping. I assume the blade is indirectly connected to the crankshaft since the engine can run without the blade turning and the blade is belt driven. Is it possible to bend a crankshaft on this type mower or is the mechanic just looking to get me to junk the mower so he can resell it after i leave?
thank you for your input

Yes, it is definitely possible to bend the crank, although if the crank is bent there is a high likelihood the clutch is damaged as well.

The clutch assembly connects directly to both the blade and crankshaft. Here's a decent diagram: http://www.partstree.com/parts/?lc=toro_consumer&mn=20482+Super+Rec ycler+Mower+1997+(SN+790000001-799999999)&dn=3319_138-_1380004-0003

When you say you took it to the local store, is the local store a Toro dealer?

It is very much possible to bend a crank on a BBC machine, although the slip of the clutch does provide some protection. Some folks disagree, but I will not straighten a bent crank, due to what I perceive to be liability issues, should crank later fail.

Since your 25 year old Toro has a Tecumseh, which isn't that valuable, I doubt your mechanic is trying to rip you off. If you had a Suzuki 2 stroke, then I'd be a little more cautious taking your mechanic's recommendation. Suzuki motors (both commercial and consumer) are almost worth more dead than alive, if parted out for ignition coil, Mikuni carburetor, etc.

Yes they can be bent. I sold my old one to a friend. He promptly ran it into a piece of metal edging. I didnt believe a indirect drive could affect the crank but it did. 160 bucks in parts and it was back running in a day(my labor).
It had the quantum engine.
Peace
