Craftsman LT1000 Blades Won't Disengage

Hello All,

I'm REALLY hoping you all might be able to help me out. I borrowed my parents lawn mower Craftsman LT1000 (917271734) it caught a big rock and bent the heck out of the blade. The mower shut off when it got hung up. I disengaged the blades and turned the mower back on... however when it started there was a cloud of smoke and the blades stayed engaged. After traveling a few feet the blades actually disengaged. Well I replaced the blades and started mowing again. AGAIN I caught something (a tree root this time) and the tractor stopped and turned off. I disengaged the blades and started it back up only this time the blades never stopped spinning. I tried going fast and adjusting the deck height. Nothing helped.

The weird thing is that it sounds like it might start to disengage and that the blades might stop however it ends up revving back up to almost full speed again. I'm sure I messed something up but I have NO idea what. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanx.
