john deere lt166 fuel blowing through air filter problem

Hi all,

I have a problem with a john deere LT166 ride on mower, it has a 16HP V Twin motor that had a fuel line blockage in the pick up tube from the tank, i cleared all the line and new filters and plugs etc, then it worked fine for a few hours.

Now it runs on tick over only, and stalls when i increase revs, it is blowing fuel out of the air filter and some black smoke from the exhaust.

Can anyone help resolve this?

I don't understand "Now it runs on tick over only" Check your carb bowl vent hose (if it has one), make sure it isn't obstructed. Other than that, sounds like you need to remove and thoroughly clean your carburetor.

I guess others know WHAT engine a LT166 has on it but I don't and am not going to look it up, it is the engine that is important, model number.

Hi,

The engine model is a 303777 its 16HP V Twin, it will start on idle but as soon as i increase the throttle, it blows fuel out of the air filter and stalls like its misfiring.

I have cleaned the carb, replaced plugs, and have a good spark, could it be that its running too rich? the only adjustment screw on the carb is rounded off so its useless.

Any help greatly appreciated.

With the limited information I have to go on...my best guess would be that you dislodged trash from your fuel line cleaning.
Most likely you have dirt or rubber contaminant between float needle and valve (in carburetor).

I've totally stripped and cleaned the carb again but it's still the same, blowing a lot of excess fuel out of the air filter so much that it is dripping onto the exhaust.

Should i be adjusting any carb needles? to stop it running so rich?

With that much gas coming out, I would suspect that your float is out of adjustment. The float is what regulates your needle valve and if it is set too high, excess gas will flow into your carb. However, this is at times evident when it is not running. It just pours out your carb.

If it is running rich, that's a problem with your air/gas mixture and will cause smoke. Check your settings.

Try spraying some WD-40 around your carb while it is running to see if your carb has an air leak. This will make your engine speed up or down.

My bet would be the carb settings. Good luck!
