hard to start

i have a craftsman 16 hp b/s 42 in deck model no.917.270670. i changed the starter, battery,and oil with good ones thought they were bad but no change the problem is the engine turns about a inch then stops.i have to turn key a lot back and fourth a few times then it will start it runs great. sometimes it will start right off. whats wrong with it...... thanks

If you have an OHV engine (has a tin kinda valve cover on the front w/ a spark plug that screws in at an angle) -likely you are dealing with a simple valve adjustment.

When asking for advice on an engine, it is always best to post the engine model number since there are MULTIPLE engines that could fit your general description and I don't do lookups from Mfgs. model number.
