Parking Brake Slipping

I have a Craftsman 46" riding mower (917.289240) that I've had for two or three years. The parking brake has gotten to where it is almost useless. If on a hill with the parking brake on, it will still roll. Any suggestions on a fix? I'd be glad to do it myself if possible, so taking it to a repairman is a suggestion I'd rather not have. Thanks.
