Tecumseh Engines

The company has been dead a couple of years. I was wondering why a company like Honda or Kawasaki doesn't buy the name and produce cheaper, but reliable engines under the old Tecumseh name so they could ramp up the quality of their own engines more. So the name Honda would really mean quality again. Just an example.

That would be like asking Ferrari to resurrect YUGO!

Bill, truer words have never been spoken! I have never owned a Tecumseh but I do lawn mower repair on the side for fun. I had two Tecumsehs come through and after the second I refused any mowers that had them from there on out! Parts SW not cheap money wise and hard to find. The strangest things fail on them, like the coil. And in my opinion the whole design of their motors is nothing short of retarded, you need a master techs tool chest just to tune one up!

Like everything else man made it depends on the model. Some are good and some are bad. Tecumseh was around a long time and in various forms so perhaps you were just fiddling with bad examples. As you said, you just play around with this stuff for fun on the side. And practically anything is better than a Yugo, except maybe a Trabant. ;-)

I always liked Tecumseh...They always held up and seemed to have more torque than a comparable Briggs.

I go all the way back to when they were Lauson engines. They went steadily downhill for years altho the only problems that I have had was with the carbs they used. Newer models on the riders, (the overheads)had problems with the push rods. Sears owned stock in the company so Craftsman engines were popular fo a number of years.
