Starter on mower needs replacing

Hi I have a L17.542 John Deere Mower made for Scotts. I've had some trouble getting it to start the first time I would turn the key. I'd then turn off then turn it again and it would typically start. I have had to do this a couple of times recently but it would start right up.

Well I was mowing the other day and had to turn it off to move some things. Got back on and it would not turn over. I could hear power going to the starter, almost a hum but nothing happening. I am not too mechanically inclined but suspect the starter has finally died. I have removed the starter and connected a fresh battery via jumper cables to the starter but only get sparks - it will not turn. So I suspect that it's done.

I called the local John Deere place and they'd have to order a new starter - $195.72 plus tax! Just thought I'd check here to see if anywhere online is a good reputable place to get parts like this and for less money. Thanks.
