maybe the oil level is too high? difficult to tell. there is a burst of smoke each time it kicks over.....

Check the oil level.
IF it's high, smell it for the presence of gasoline.

oil seems fine, although I did just change it previous to this. Are you thinking there may be a crack in the motor or seal problem?

Well, you brought up the possibility of a high oil level.
I'm not sure why you feel it's difficult to tell. Just check it after it's sat overnight, before you start cranking on it.

A leaking needle/seat in the carb can allow the gas to drain through into the crankcase.

Chances are your original problem was that the main jet just needed the holes cleaned out.
It's the "brass nut" holding the carb bowl on.

Or, it could be a good day to just have a beer....:)
