Craftsman mower 917.376061 won't keep running

Howdy all, I've read some posts about carburetor tuning. I just replaced the whole thing. I was having problems with this mower running before so.....

Previous to it quitting altogether It was revving up and down repeatedly, never getting to full rev. eventually quitting. I replaced the entire carb unit and now when I start it up it runs for a second then quits.

I also changed the spark plug.

grass is getting high, beer is looking good

any suggestions?

maybe the oil level is too high? difficult to tell. there is a burst of smoke each time it kicks over.....

Check the oil level.
IF it's high, smell it for the presence of gasoline.

oil seems fine, although I did just change it previous to this. Are you thinking there may be a crack in the motor or seal problem?

Well, you brought up the possibility of a high oil level.
I'm not sure why you feel it's difficult to tell. Just check it after it's sat overnight, before you start cranking on it.

A leaking needle/seat in the carb can allow the gas to drain through into the crankcase.

Chances are your original problem was that the main jet just needed the holes cleaned out.
It's the "brass nut" holding the carb bowl on.

Or, it could be a good day to just have a beer....:)
