John deere won't start

Hi all

Any help would be appreciated greatly. My la115 will not start. I took it out of the garage and after a minute of running I could tell something was not correct. Then I heard a long clunk from the engine an it shut off. Now it just cranks over with a slight shutter. Any thoughts on this and maybe what to look for. Thanks much.

Hopefully you won't need to be looking for a new tractor. Does the top screen of the engine turn freely by hand? Does it seem to have compression? Oil level?
