A grinding wheel set up to follow a programed spline, in two dimensions, which is tangent to a cylinder surface, in three dimensions. Sounds simple enough, not!

If you have a lathe big enough to swing the reel, fitted with a tool post grinder you can do a half-a$$ed approximation of a "spin grind". You will also need grind the bed knife, and to do that correctly, you will have to establish true position relative to the mounting holes.

The previous poster describes how to attempt a "relief grind", which is the preferrable method. However, without knowing the geometry of the reel, it will be a monumentally difficult task to approximate the coordinates and actually do it right.

My advice is to go the a shop specializing in golf course machinery and have them do it on a Neary, Foley, or Ideal reel grinder. If you're still set on trying to do it at home, knock yourself out.
