I have never sharpened a mower blade blade before and I want to know how to.

If you never sharpened one before odds are you don't have some sort of grind wheel. If that is the case, take it of the crank, go to your dealer hand it and five dollars over the counter and it will come back sharpened and hopefully balanced.

Can you use a wrench and a file with some accuracy? If not just buy a new one or pay to get the old one sharpened.

You need a 3 1/2" vise with a good solid mount and a 10" flat file. Alternate method; you need a bench grinder. if the blade edges are in bad shape, you'll need the grinder anyway. The file is used to maintain a good blade, and the grinder is best for restoring cutting edges that have been damaged/worn away. Like roadbike said, sometimes its better just to take it to the shop. If its really bad, replace it. Here's what I go by; if the airfoils on the back of the blade are not worn thin, I'll sharpen. If they are too thin or already chipping away, replace.

Thanks for all your help in this matter.

I just use a grinder....the one with two grinding wheels, one on each side. Worked like a champ. Good as new. Might not look very nice, but you can tell by looking that it is sharp enough and cuts well on the mower.

That's a 'bench grinder'. That's what the shop guys use most of the time. The file is for the perfectionists who don't want to remove more steel than necessary and want to keep the original line and shape. Plus the grinder can overheat the steel and make it brittle if you dwell too long in one spot. You want to avoid heat-discoloration of the steel where it turns blue and gold. Actually, guns used to be 'blued' by heating the steel, and some guns have 'straw'-colored parts done the same way. It just depends on a few degrees of difference in the heat.

Belt sander works work better than any bench grinder.

Yep, especially if you have one!

I think a hand grinder is the easiest. I use a 4 1/2 grinder for my blade sharpening.

ok, dumb question. It's the leading edge (the lower edge as the mower sits on the ground) that needs to be sharp, right?

Thanks for posting, everyone.

Correct.

"ok, dumb question. It's the leading edge (the lower edge as the mower sits on the ground) that needs to be sharp, right? " You can get into trouble with upper and lower. Most mowers, the upper edge is what is sharpened. Since mowers run clockwise (as viewed from the top) use that as your guide in determining the direction of the "leading edge"

An easier way might be to say that the beveled part of the blade, the machine-ground edge, always faces up.

Actually, the machine ground edge "usually" faces up. Several electrics are an exception- although there are others in gas powered as well.

Didn't know that. Never saw any yet.
