| I have a John Deere L100 mower and rescently blew the engine. I bought a direct replacement engine on-line and installed it puting everything back the way it was when I took the old one out. Now when I go to start it...nothing. Doesnt even try to crank. I thought maybe I need a new battery. Got a new battery and still nothing. Thought maybe the solenoid. Got a new solenoid but nothing. If I jump the solenoid it will crank but not stay on. The terminals on the battery are clean and I dont see any obvious problems with any wires. When I go to turn the key the carburator will click but not the solenoid. When I put the key in the on position there is current going to the carb but there is no current going to the 2 prongs on the solenoid. I read somewhere that it might be a ground and there is a wire that needs to be connected to one of the bolt that holds the engine to the frame but I don't see it.
PLEASE HELP!!! |

| I'd suggest removing the spark plug(s), grounding the lead(s) and then see if the engine cranks. You want the lead(s) grounded to prevent spark JUST IN CASE the cylinder(s) is/are full of gasoline. A new battery can be bad. Do you have a battery charger? |

| It sounds like you can get it to crank if you jump the solenoid- correct? The L100 doesn't have a ground that attaches to the engine mount bolt. It sounds like the battery ground would be good if you are cranking the engine whilst jumping the lugs on the solenoid. You are correct that the solenoid needs to have a ground on one of the small terminals- that is if the safety side is in line. IE PTO switch in off, park brake set etc. The other small terminal is the trigger wire that has 12v once the key is turned to start. It has one fuse, which must be good if the solenoid on the carb activates. Turning the key itself won't make the carb click otherwise. I'm unsure how you are checking your voltage if you say there is no voltage at the solenoid. Use the red lead on the trigger wire (purple?)and ground the other one rather than rely on the other ternminal being a ground at this point. |

| IGNORE my previous post, since it does crank when you jump the solenoid. I was thing that possibly the carb was leaking through and hydro-locked the engine. I'd check the adjustment of the brake/clutch SWITCH. Your crank circuit is pretty much like this- One of the FEW DEERE schematics I have, so I hope it's the right year! |

| READING the title of your post- "John Deere L100 will not crank just click!" IS the starter solenoid clicking or not???? |
