Removing PTO Clutch Toro Walk Behind 44 in

I cannot get the pto clutch off my Toro model 30176 44inch walk behind mower. It is loose and slips easily down to where it hits the rear axle! Do I have to lift the engine up to get enough clearance? What a lousy design if so!

    You may be able to find service manual at the Toro parts look up site. It wouldn't be the first time that an axle needed to be loosened to get a PTO clutch off. Darn compact frames anyways....
