1990 briggs 18hp will not spin over

I have a B S 18 hp twin cyl. mod 422707 that wont start it turns over very hard it doesn't make a full revolution before it stops almost binds i checked spark and its good. if i put my thumbs on the spark plugs holes it wont spin. but without the plugs in the cylinder head it spins free and fast.i checked the flywheel key way because the guy told me that the belt pulley broke and he had it re welded. its good all belts are loose. I ran jumper cables from the car (not running)positive and negative directly to the starter with the same results. the guy i got it from told me the oil had not been changed it a very very long time, i checked it and it looked clean. i don't know where to go from here.

The starter doesn't sound good by your description. If this was an oil burner, it may have carbon buildup in the combustion chamber. Still trying to figure out how you have a thumb on each plug hole and you reach the switch at the same time...

He either has long legs, or his nose is on the end of his arm. (To push the start button. Or maybe he turns the key with his teeth?! ;0)

I have the same issue but with no spark. Plugs are good and new Magneto installed with correct gap clearance.Also interested in any useful replies !!

Are you the guy from another thread who I asked if he was sure he had installed the coil correctly? Plug wires head toward the back of the engine, make a 180 degree turn, come back under the coil and exit the Intake Manifold side of the engine. IF they don't do this, you have the coil on upside down.
