looking for a new mower

hey guys, its been a few years since i last posted. In the last few years i have had several mowers, had a brand new honda 3 years ago, it was a good mower, but the very first time i hit something in the yard, i bent a crank. i rebuilt it and sold it soon after.

last October, I decided I decided i would treat myself to a new lawn boy. What a mistake that was. When i opened the box. i found a mower with a bent front wheel bracket. giving it the benefit of the doubt, i straitened the bracket and tried my new mower out. it mulches good when the grass isnt too high. As for Bagging, You can almost forget about that! If the grass is anything but very dry and not too tall, you can bag it, Otherwise, plan on half assed mulching it.

That model is the 10604 with the kohler engine.

At this point, I have had enough! Im in the market for a new mower, I want something that will both bag and mulch very well. side discharge would be a nice option too.

i really prefer a rwd self propel as i have never owned a fwd model that i felt worked very well.
Im in hopes that this will be the last machine i buy for many years.

im looking really close at the snapper commercial hi-vac at the moment.
I was hoping some of you may chime in on some good models.

RE: looking for a new mower

I had a Snapper Hi-Vac 21" I bought in the late 80's. It was a really good mower, very solid. I did mulch with it even though it only had a 3.5HP engine and it still did a pretty good job. With the higher power in the new ones I would imagine it would be great. If you are willing to spend the money I think you can't go wrong with the Snapper. One thing I really liked about it was the multi-speed self propel with the handle that you could feather the drive while going around trees ect. The best self propel system I ever had.

Only thing--Snapper is going to be heavy but they all seem heavy to me these days. I bought the Lawn Boy because it seemed fairly light.

BTW--I don't have the problems with my Lawn Boy that you mentioned. Mulches and bags pretty good and this year in Minnesota we've had plenty of rain and hot weather so the grass is really thick. It mulches better than the $800 John Deere mower I had before.
