They need 3/16"- 3/8" of "freeplay" lever tip to handle bar with the button down per Honda. It seems strangely worded to me. Basically, it has that much for a solid engagement- too much and I suppose it is posible that there would be too much tension that they don't release. I don't find them too finicky.
