Self-propelled Honda problem

I have a 4 year old Honda self-propelled mower that is not self-propelling properly. I have visually checked the belt and it appears to be in place and in good condition. I have adjusted the cable numerous times with no success. When I lift the rear wheels off of the ground and push the propel lever the wheels spin what looks like pretty fast but when I lower the mower to the ground they stop and will not move the mower. What should I check next?

Sounds like belt tension to me. You'll have to turn it up and look underneath to see if the belt gets tight when the drive is engaged (engine OFF of course and spark plug grounded). Anytime you tilt a mower up on one side, make sure the carburetor is on the high side. The belt could be worn or stretched and/or something could be preventing it from getting tight enough, like bent parts or foreign material in the way.

I've got a similar problem with a Lawnboy 10330 on which I just changed the belt. (That was a real joy...no easy way to do it on this model)

Now the belt seems way too slack and will not propel at all.

Nothing seems to be hampering it and it is the correct belt for the mower.

Any ideas appreciated
