Especially when the engine is cold. Also, sometimes it backfires, and a puff or two of blue smoke comes out of the left side. Sometimes the rope will pull back on me when I am pulling it. It's a bit scary to start. And I am very concerned about this banging; it bangs quite loudly for a few times only and then once up and running straightens out.

It sounds like that the blade hub my be loose, have a sheared hub key and possibly a partially sheared flywheel key. Start by removing the spark plug wire, tipping the mower on its side with the air filter up and then check out the hub condition and tightness. It is a good time to verify that the engine mount bolts are secure as well.

OK. Thanks. I can't get at it until the weekend as it's my mother's mower.
