| HI,
I have a 12 year old Craftsman lawnmower. Of late I am seeing that teh front wheel drive wheels are not engaging when I move the lever forward. On opening the belt cover, I found that there is a small play on the lever. Even thought the lever gets locked, I can push it a little more forward and then only the gear engages. However when I release my hand it comes back a little bit and that causes the gear to disengage. Is there a way to adjust the wire or spring so that the gear fully engages? Thanks |

| Could the cable need adjusting? Have you lubed the cable under the cover? Is that area full of grass and dirt? Does the cable move when you push the engage handle forward? Does the pulley move freely when it is out of gear? All things to check. |

| the newer mowers have an adjustment bolt at the drive control lever. i had to adjust mine about an inch out from factory settings to get it to fully engage the belt. keep the owner's manual, they can be helpful. the sears manuals come with part schematics, which are helpful when working on your mower. if your wheels wobble, you might need to take off your wheels to make sure the gears aren't worn. it may indicate a bad wheel assembly if they are worn badly. |

| i reexamined my craftsman honda gcv 160 again. the adjustment bolt is a hex-shaped connector at the end of the cable going into the lever assembly on the handle bars. a wrench will turn it easily. i had mine adjusted about 1/2" inch out ("loosened"). i think it pulls the cable into the housing to make the cable tighter. |

| Thanks for all your replies. I have taken the belt cover off and it is clean. The lever and spring move left and right, it is just the play. I thought the drive gear or worm drive was worn out and opened the whole assembly but it looked good and so I boxed it up. Thats when I noticed the play in the cable. I will try and adjust the cable. How do I adjust it? turn the hex bolt clockside or anti-clockside. I didnt see it in my owners manual. |
