Honda HRR216 - Experience with rear discharge?

Hi all,

I have read a lot of posts, and haven't been able to find a clear answer to this. I am replacing a mower with side discharge. I want a self propelled, light (80ish pound) mower, and like the Honda HRR216VKA. Overall I think I prefer the Honda paddle speed control to the Toro Personal Pace.

My question: The current Honda has only a built in rear discharge, and I am wondering what real world experience is with it, particularly in heavy grass. Are you tracking through the clippings, or do they disperse a little to the side? Are they tidy, or do they clump up? Do you end up with grass all over your shoes (compared to a conventional side discharge?

Thanks

The Honda rear-discharge chute is great. The clippings are thrown farther because the chute rides a little higher than the typical side dischrge. Clippings are distributed over a wider area and you don't get windrows of clippings under most circumstances. It also has a steel baffle built in to prevent the very slim chance of an object penetrating the chute and hitting your legs with enough velocity to do damage. I know of no down-side to it. I had an HRB216TDA a few years back and I picked up a discharge chute for those times when for whatever reason I let the grass get too high.

Check the specific model of XXX216XXX you are getting. There are some differences across model years and models within the series as to whether or not discharge chutes are available and/or can be fitted. This is compounded by the fact that the "same" models are available through HD and Honda Power Equipment dealers.

I normally bag with my HRR216VKA and mulch (it has twin blades) when the grass is low. The mower is light enought for my wife to handle easily and the throttle control is very good and can be adjusted easily.

Best Wishes--Carl

Thanks to you both.

I think the current model is different than the one saxman1 is referencing. The current HRR216 discharges down to the ground behind the mower - haven't seen it in action yet. The older models had an insert that does discharge to the side. My understanding is the side discharge insert isn't available for this model - just the out the back option.

The weight and throttle are part of what I like about the Honda - thanks ApprenticeGardner for verifying

Anyone with experiences with the more current (possibly starting in 2012) model?

John
