Troy Bilt Chipper / Vac

I have a 5 hp. Troy Bilt chipper vac I bought new in '93. I am in need of a new bag for it, but I can't find a source for it. Evidently, MTD owns Troy Bilt parts business, but they don't even recognize my model number. Any suggestions?

I have a similer model. They no longer support these. Try e-bay or making your own.

If it looks like the one in the link below, just get a replacement bag for an MTD chipper/shredder.
I picked some up on ebay a year or 2 ago for MUCH cheaper than a retail store or direct from MTD

Here is a link that might be useful: does it look like this one ?

I have a old gardenway a troy built that isn`t painted red. Worked great but the dust will eat the zipper after awhile I`ve put in two new ones my hand sticking isn`t that great but it lasted about two seasons each zipper if you have holes in the bag and have a hot glue gun get some canvas and patch them from the outside, it to hard to get the hot glue to stick to the dirt that`s picked up. Or make a new collection bag, I wouldn`t use a PITA zipper again, I would just make it so it`s one big opening and you just can tie it off, will also be easier to empty

I'm not sure if this will work on yours, but MTD has a chipper/shredder bag 764-0430/764-0199A which has been available at Home Depot.

Regular price is $20.00 at H-D, but I found it "yellow tagged" for $5.00 and bought for my Sears 5hp shredder/bagger. About a month agao I saw the same at another H-D in central Jersey, also marked down to $5.00 and sucked it up as well. I've recently bought a used Sears 8hp chipper/shredder with 3" capacity and the bag works well on it.

The bag has a drawstring closure and looks like it will fit up to about an 8 X 8 opening. I'd recommend sniffing around Home Depot to see if they still have them and give it a try. $20.00 is reasonable, and if you can get for $5.00 it is almost a no-brainer.

Smitty, I imagine you have the walk-behind bagger/chipper
vac? TroyBilt only made those for a couple of years, and
as such, parts may be a bit tough to find. MTD bought the
tiller business from Garden Way, and the chipper/shredder
part of the their business is just kinda...."out there".
I've heard that Murray purchased that side of their line-up,
and then...Murray filed for bankruptcy protection. Briggs
and Stratton now owns "what's left" of Murray. You might
try a Briggs source and see what (if anything) they can tell
you about your chipper/vac. BEST OF LUCK !!

Has anyone tried to modify the screen of a TB chipper/vac to improve airflow and reduce clogging? My yard has primarily oaks with large tough leaves and they are invariably wet when I vac them. After just a few bags the fan shroud is completely clogged if I use a screen. I would like to use a screen to get some reduction of the volume, but it does not need to be the 6:1 or 8:1 promised by the stock screens. 3:1 or 4:1 would be great. I am thinking of removing vanes in the area where it clogs and perhaps slanting the remaining vanes so they are not impeeding the air flow.

Have a ChipperVac purchased in '96. We have a pecan and a maple tree in the yard. Think that these hard woods are to much for the chipper. The end of the shoot was spot welded on again. Then a heavier gauge metal was welded in. Not sure now if the shoot end or tip is long enough.

Anyway the thing knocks now. Could the flywheel be lose?
The engine is very difficult to start now too.
Is there another 5 HP engine that could be used as a replacement instead of a Tecumseuch? Spelling?
Really disappointed when I learn that T-B went under. A real shame since the Pony we have was purchased in '82 and still works.

I have the same 5 horse TB that has lost the zipper in the bag. I will be attemting to replace it soon.
Stevebot, I never have been able to use my shred plate as it restricts air flow and stays clogged. I would like to hear if your modification helps.

I make Brand New Chipper Blade Kits that fit Troy Bilt Chipper/Vac machines. Since Troy-Bilt was bought out by a company out of China, they no longer service or offer replacement blade kits for there products. These Chipper Blades should be replaced at least once a year or more often depending on use and what your chipping (type of wood and quantity). My Blades will hold an edge (I use only the finest materials for my blades, Starrett oil hardening tool steel, heat treated to 60-62RE) I am a Master Tool and Die Machinist and make these Chipper Blade Kits brand new from US Steel. I have been a Master Tool and Die Specialist for over 30 years and I certainly can make chipper blades. Please see my E-bay Ad at the link Below. Thank You -

If you have any questions or comments please feel free to E-mail me directly at KONUNDRUM76@AOL.COM - Chris

I have a Troy-Bilt 47035 chipper-vac and the plastic zipper went on the bag. After looking in vain for a new bag, I found "Get There! Designs" on the web. They do "heavy duty sewing" and zipper repair or replacement. They replaced the zipper with a metal one for $18.00 + $6.00 shipping, and did a great job! For $24.00 my $450 Troy-Bilt is once again running. I cut the cable tie, removed the plastic elbow and washed the bag before shipping it to them. The website is http://www.gettheredesigns.com and the name of the person I dealt with is Rick Aylsworth. I'm sure that they could also repair any rips in the bag.

I was given a chipper vav Model # 47278 with a tecumseh 4 HP engine . It started 1 time and ran. Went back the next day and it would not start. It appears not to have any spark. Maybe the coik is bad. If so does any one know where i can find one. And what year it might be, There is a garden way tag on it Thanks Does this one have points?

Some time ago I bought a larger, better bag for my 8hp Troy-bilt chipper/vac and want to get another but the source on ebay has disappeared. Anyone have experience with non OEM bags for this unit??

For a quality bag, check out GrasscatchersUSA. (grasscatchers.com). They make two versions for the Troy Bilt vac. I use one of their grass bags on my Lawn Boy and it is very well made. Much better than the LB grass bags.

I have a Troy Bilt chipper/vac with a zippered bag. When the zipper needed to be replaced I contacted Rick Aylsworth of Get There Design. I sent him the "cleaned" bag and he replaced the zipper. I don't recall the cost exactly, but I think it was around $30.
