blades turn 360 degrees

I hit a small ant hill while cutting grass. The mower immediately cut off and won't restart. The blades turn completely around - both backward and forward - by hand. I checked the flywheel key, but it looks intact. Could it be broken, but not look broken? Any suggestions as to what happened to my mower?

Check the blade attachment.
I can't imagine you did enough disassembly to look at the flywheel key without checking below first.

What mower/engine is on this?

The most likely reason this engine doesn't want to run is that the blades act as a flywheel. The engine has a light weight flywheel which isn't heavy enough to do the job by itself.

Some of the older mowers used a bolt and large washers to secure the blade. Does moving the blade turn the piston? If your blade uses a hub, maybe the bolt is loose enough and the key in the hub broke.
