If you were going to buy a new push lawnmower...

| ... for your grandmother... what would you get? Property is about 1/8-1/4 acre of lawn and the terrain is mostly flat, just a slight slope in the front yard.
Keeping cost down would be nice but more importantly, what is easiest for an arthritic older woman with a bad back to start, push, and turn, and still get the job done? If it's a gas mower, it has to be key-start and power assist. Would an electric mower with or without cord be better?
Got any brand/models you could suggest, please? Thanks! |

"what is easiest for an arthritic older woman with a bad back" Either do it yourself or hire a lawn service. Not joking.

Since I'm the grandma and I can't afford a lawn service, I have to do it myself. Besides, it is good exercise. :o)

If the yard is layed out to where a corded model would work good- that would be my choice. They always start, light and easy to push. Just be sure you have the proper cord and reliable circuits to run it. Battery ones are heavier, but worth considering. The cost of a gas, electric start, w/ drive is likely starting around $400. You may find that deal at the end of season too! Good luck.

Check out your local Snapper and Toro dealers. They can show you what's available and help you make an informed decision.

Thank you both. Orangedot, I probably should have mentioned that what I'm coming out of is a Toro gas key/start self-propelled that has spent way too much time in the shop. I probably should have bailed on it a couple of years ago as I've spent way too much on repairs and it won't start again. So Toro doesn't appeal to me right now. I read something about Snapper not standing behind something a couple of days ago; wish I could remember what it is, sorry. Tom, I would love to find an end-of-the-season deal. Thanks for the info on the electrics -- more and more I'm thinking tht's the way I should go. I do have good electrical outlets, as my weed eater is electric. Do you have any brand/model recommendations? Do you have an electric?

" I read something about Snapper not standing behind something a couple of days ago; wish I could remember what it is, sorry." That is most likely a dealer problem and not a Snapper company problem. You have to find a good caring dealer no matter what brand you buy. Like Tom said, an electric may be the thing for you with a small yard. Be sure you use a GFCI outlet to plug it in, or buy a power cord with the GFCI built in. Good luck.

Thank you! I found what was said about Snapper: "My old electric Snapper was a trickle charge...plug in and forget, but it would not cut the heavy lawn like the Earthwise does...and Snapper is a crap company as they no longer make the battery so you have to throw away a perfectly good lawn mower because there are no batteries to be found and nobody will rebuild it. DON'T SUPPORT SNAPPER PRODUCTS BECAUSE THEY WON'T SUPPORT YOU." (emphasis by original author) Source

After doing quite a bit of research online and making phone calls (not much floor display of mowers this time of year) I made a decision. I just placed a mail order fot the Worx cordless model from Costco. If I'm unhappy with it for any reason, Costco has a great return policy. Wish me luck!

I will try to remember to do that, thanks, Tom. I suppose it will take a week or so to get here, then I'll need a dry day to try it out (not so easy to get dry days near Seattle). My son came over and borrowed the neighbor's riding mower and is doing all my lawn right now (it had gotten bad), then he will take my old lawn mower away. Fine with me if he can fix it and sell it or enjoy it; if I never see it again it will be too soon. I'm excited to try out the new one. Maybe my next one after this will be robotic. Now that everyone is talking green-this and green-that I hope we'll see advances in that area and prices coming down. Eventually, maybe nobody will actually mow lawns. :o)

Well, ya could always try a goat or a sheep! Ya'd get two caveats with one of them. ya won't have to feed it, and it'll fertilize the grass as it eats!
