Honda Harmony HRB215 Coil problems?

Have a used Honda Harmony HRB215 that would surge after about 15 min of operation getting progressively worse over the next minute or so until it died. Would restart when fully choked, surge momentarily, then die again. Went through carb and fully cleaned it and installed a new E3 spark plug. Same thing. Mower finally died completely and I was not able to start it with Starter Fluid. Kill switch was working properly so I replaced the magneto. At the Honda Dealer, they showed my magneto and separate plug boot in the exploded drawing BUT, there was no listing on the side of page for the parts, Instead, they showed a drawing of a different magneto w/plug boot attached next to my old one in the exploded drawing. This magneto assembly HAD a listing (PN# 30500-ZG9-801) and was a factory part. Clerk said it must be the newer upgraded magneto so i bought it. Instead of 1 blade connector for the kill wire, there were 3 now and he did not know which to use. I also asked about the amount of gap for the magneto to the rotating cylinder w/magnet. He handed me a business card and said to use it as a feeler gauge. Came home and installed the new magneto, gapped as instructed, connected kill wire to the thickest blade of the 3, figuring worst that could happen was motor would not shut off. Reassembled the mower and tried to start it. Nothing. won't start with Starter Fluid either. What am I missing? Please help.
Thanks, Robert

What is the complete model #? Or you can look it up w/ the link below. It would be nice to verify their look up. I would think they could also provide you with the info you need. One might think a coil with multiple terminals may be used in conjunction with a separate module.I've had to install only few Honda coils ever. Never on one of these. Is the part # still visible on the old coil?

Model tag is missing. Here's what i have:
HRB215-GC SN# MZBA-6248007
Engine SN# GJAB-7097879

Only numbers on the old coil are stamped in the side of the plastic case. They read: 51228 The separate boot has the following part numbers: Line 1 reads: RTFAM254 Line 2 reads: NB05EZ.

Thanks in advance, Robert

Here is the diagram the parts clerk showed me. Coil Item#9 is my coil and that part # was not accessible on his, but coil Item#10 was accessible and what he sold me. Notice the 3 tabs,

I'm not following. 30500-ZG9-M04 would be the proper coil. The M04 is the updated #. The 30500-ZG9-801 is not shown for that engine. It shows the 801 fits GXV160's and the M04 fits the GXV120. You'll see the model # cast in the block to be sure.I could dig further if it is different.

That's what I needed to know. Now to get them to take it back in exchange for the correct one. How do I set the gap between the coil and flywheel? The old one was a lot closer to the flywheel than the thickness of a business card. Thanks for your help.

Your engine is a GXV140 (which is very similar to GXV120). Previous poster is correct. -801 is for larger GXV160, and -M04 is correct for GXV120 and GXV140.

You need to replace coil with -M04 first. Then when you install correct coil, push it as far away from flywheel as slotted holes will allow and tighten screw. Rotate flywheel so magnets are lined up with coil armature. Put the business card between coil and magnets and loosen screws. Magnet should pull coil down on the flywheel. Retighten screws and rotate flywheel to eject business card. You should now have a gap of .008 to .010 withoout any metal-to-metal contact.

If your source can't get you the correct coil, try the internet or try Plano Power. Plano has it, although not cheap. Their price is $79.98.

Luckly, the dealer took back the -801 and had the -M04 in stock ($84 + $17 boot) =( Will try to install tomorrow. I only see 1 magnet so I assume it will either span the distance or I will do them 1 at a time. You guys have been a great help. Thanks

Using the magnet just helps hold the coil into place. Set both legs at once. Glad you have the proper coil now. Where's the "happy sparking" guy when you need him....
