Toro PP 20017 Drive problem

Hi, new here and have enjoyed the articles but now I've had to register to ask a question. After just some limited research, it seems the Toro PP mowers have been plagued with problems. My model 20017 is about 3 years old and from day 1, it has made noise. An authorized repair center only "cleaned" the gears, according to the service ticket, but this didn't help any. Now it has finally quit pulling nearly entirely, having to push it the last bit of the mowing area a few days ago. My question is this, for now: can anyone tell me how the pinion gears go back on the axle, in other words the orientation, as they will spin freely one direction but catch, or drive in the opposite direction. I was too quick removing them to inspect, clean and lube them and didn't note this detail. Now I have it back together and it won't roll freely manually pushing it. I don't want to start it until I fix this discrepancy. If while looking at the pinion on end toward the transmission, wheel removed, are they supposed to turn freely CW or CCW? And is this the same for both sides? Or could the left side be CW while the right side is CCW or visa versa? I have to correct this before continuing trying to correct the original problem, which may be the xmission. Hope this makes sense, and thanks for any guidance. BTW, the Toro website recognizes my model number but the link doesn't work. Thanks

RE: Toro PP 20017 Drive problem

Many Toro gears have a small letter on the side which indicates the direction it should face. R would face the right side. If yours does not, the best way to determine direction would be this. From the side view, at the top- the flat part would face the back. It is the same both sides. If you have input to the transmission and no output- it is time for a new trans. Fortunately, they are affordable compared to many. Let us know how you do.
