Tec OVRM120- -22043E Series 8 Carb w/Lean Surge

This Tec has a lean surge and will only run on the high speed setting. The throttle shaft is loose (~.020") and the lean surge is gone when I spray carb cleaner in the throttle shaft. I am assuming the throttle shaft or carb body is worn. I have an new OEM throttle shaft and 632760B carb rebuild kit. I hear the throttle plate can come loose without thread locker on the screw. Are one of phil head screws in the kit for the throttle plate or should I use Loctite on the original screw? I think the original screw is a slotted type. What else would cause a lean surge in this carb?

Hopefully you are not dealing with wear in the body itself that would affect runability. It really doesn't take much wear though to have the carb spray test effect the surge. The plastic tube seals will also cause a surge. You are doing it the right way by replacing these and the bowl seals along with the shaft. If you notice corrosion around the bowl in the seal area, replace it as well. You're free to use locktite on the old screw if the other screw isn't provided. Look closely before removing the old butterfly. Before you crank it down, move the shaft so you are sure that you are getting the full range of motion. Ensure a good repair by cleaning the fuel tank and line- replacing the line is even better. Good luck.

Thanks for all the info. How much it too much play in the throttle shaft? Is there any way to repair the worn carb body shaft bore ? On some of the automotive carbs they would use a broach to reduce the carb body shaft bore or drill out the bore and press in a bushing. That might be too much considering the cost of the carb, but I thought I would put it out there.

L&G carbs have replaceable bushings in some of the more advanced carbs as well, but not that I've seen on these. We'll just hope the shaft corrects your leak in question. I suppose one could adopt a never say never attitude and make a bushing if one had to. You can take just about any 5 y/o mower and get a change when doing the carb spray test and they don't usually run any worse for the wear until they get a bit more worn. I remember the wearing of the carb and shaft as being more of an issue w/ motor sports carbs really.
