Let the clues begin!
You are in South Africa .
Were you told anything about the plant - native to your continent or not? flowering or berries or height or.... what?
Is there a reason you cannot ask the giver of the plant?

All I was told about the tree was that it was a South African tree endemic to the Cape, which grew "straight up"???

I would suggest you try either a botanical garden, or I found a link to this herbarium which has a "contact us" link and presumably might be willing to ID for you

Here is a link that might be useful: The Bolus Herbarium
