Help with two plants

Posted by bltzkrig CA (My Page) on

Hi, I'm a new member and greatly appreciate the resources and help provided by this forum. I would like help to ID two plants in my backyard. I have two pictures for each plant.

The first plant (top row pics) is a shrub/bush and I've been told it's some kind of a bamboo. It gets clumps of small red berries which I haven't tried eating yet!

The second plant (bottom row) is a tree about 10 ft tall, and puts out a small number of purple berries, which are edible, but not juicy.

Any help appreciated greatly!

The first one I thin kis nandina, with leaves that are supposedly edible after several boilings.

Nandina domestica, HEAVENLY BAMBOO (not a real bamboo and not edible).

Syzygium paniculatum, BRUSH CHERRY (edible).

Joe, I think you are wrong. My references say Nandina domestica is edible if the leaves are boiled a lot.
