Mystery Winter Squash!

Hello!

My mother is growing this delicious, sweet winter squash in her garden in Puerto Rico, but we can't remember what it is, and it refuses to conform to any one variety we find. It's shaped like a Red Kuri, but has a rind like a Kabocha except it gets an light orange tinge all over (while still being mostly green/white while ripe...the photo's flash didn't go off, so the light is darker/yellower than it should be), not on a blush patch. The flesh is more dry than wet. I've got a photo of them growing on the vine, too. I might have given her the seeds from a squash I bought in a farmers market in Seattle last year, so it may well not be native to the island. Does anyone have any guesses that might help? Much thanks!

A bunch of them growing...we have around 9 so far, and they seem very happy in the rainforest.

I might have given her the seeds from a squash I bought in a farmers market in Seattle last year

not many plants in this family come true from seed... so finding a name might be impossible ...

if you want reliable product.. year after year.. you have to rebuy the seed ...

so i wish you luck in finding a name.. before your seed degenerates over the years ...

wonder if there is a squash forum????

Thank you all for the help, and I'll definitely check out the other forum (couldn't find it in the lists before, so thanks saltcedar!). Ken_adrian, thanks for the info on the likelihood that we've just got a rogue squash strain that won't stick around. We'll enjoy them now, at least. :-)
