I don't know what it is -- someone will doubtless soon recognize it -- but I have a couple of questions for you:

Where did you find the jar? If outdoors, what sort of temperatures was it exposed to?

Do you have any idea how old the seeds are?

The jar was in the pantry along with other jars that we keep grains and dried beans in. My dad accidentally cooked a little bit of it this morning with our daily oatmeal/grain gruel and it wasn't starchy inside, though I think it dyed the gruel a yellowish color. Here is a picture of it cooked. I opened it up a little to show what it looks like on the inside. I have no idea how old it is but I think my MIL brought it within the last couple of months.

Okay -- so not something your MIL was intending to plant. [That being the case, we don't have to worry about seed viability -- which was the reason for my concern as to the age and storage conditions of the seed.]

Next question: how large are individual seeds?

Rather than something you would eat raw or cook, this might be a seed which you would sprout, and then eat the sprouts.

[I checked the rest of the alphabet of seeds on The Seed Site, and didn't see anything which looked like the photo above.]

Here's a comparison with sesame seeds for size. I also tried looking for seeds that can dye other things yellow but didn't turn up anything. I'll try sprouting it like you suggested. It might give me a clue as to what it is. Thanks for looking into it!

Look very similar to fenugreek seeds, used in some apple pie spice mixes.

Fenugreek seed is also used for sprouting.

Struck me as possibly fenugreek as well. Used in Indian and other cuisine as well.
