Candy cane tree?

Saw this on Hains Point in D.C. Is this a real species or some kind of topiary? A Google search was impossible -- everything was related to the candy variety of candy cane.

I suspect that it just a nickname for the tree due to the unusual bark configuration. Looks like a lightning strike when the tree was younger.

I agree with rhizo_1. The number indicates it's on some sort of trail through the park. Maybe the local authority can tell you what species it is.

Now I want to find stops 1-6, wherever they are. Who knows what wonders I've been missing all the years I've lived in Washington?

being sick and all .. and nothing better to do.. i found out [google] that this tree is in kiddo heaven.. in a park called candy cane park ...

frankly IMHO ... somebody peeled all the bark off.. in this shape.. as an amusement for the park ...

rather amusing.. but i wouldnt do it to any of my trees ... as it appears the interior is rotting ....
